A man attempting to pass off bogus cash to a store was shot at by a clerk, New Orleans police said.

The incident happened on Monday about 12:30 p.m. in the 6200 block of South Miro Street.

Police said a man went into the Elio Wine Warehouse where he attempted to make a purchase using a counterfeit $50 bill.

Investigators said the store employee told the man that the bill was counterfeit and that the police were being notified.

While the employee was on the phone attempting to contact police, investigators said the man grabbed the employee, snatched the cellphone and fled to a nearby vehicle.

Police said the employee chase the man out of the store, and then two people from a nearby business saw the incident and stepped in to help.

The two people grabbed hold of the vehicle the man was trying to flee in and were dragged a short distance, police said. That’s when investigators said the employee of the wine store got a gun and began to fire at the vehicle as it fled.

One of the people who was dragged suffered minor to moderate injuries, police said, and was taken to a hospital where he was listed in stable condition.
