HAMMOND, La (NBC33) -- Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff deputies have arrested a man for leaving three minors at a fast food restaurant, so that he could return to his home and consume alcoholic beverages.
A concerned resident noticed three small children (ages 4, 5 and 6) walking on University Ave, in the middle of the road, on Feb 18. The citizen brought the children to the sheriff’s office, where deputies took custody of them.
It was found that Curtis Woods, 58, brought them to a local Burger King. While at the restaurant, the children went to the bathroom, only to find that Woods was gone as they returned. The children then decided they would walk home.
Deputies soon made contact with the children’s mother. She arrived shortly thereafter to the police station to retrieve her kids.
Woods returned to the restaurant, smelling of alcohol and causing a scene. Police returned and arrested Woods.
Woods stated he left the children in his vehicle while he went inside to order food. He said that when he came out of the restaurant five minutes later, the children were all gone. He figured someone picked them up, so he went home and started drinking alcohol.
Woods was charged with three counts of Cruelty to a Juvenile, three counts of Criminal Abandonment, and Disturbing the Peace. He was charged with Cruelty because of the risk of injury and death by leaving the minors in the road.
