LAFAYETTE, LA (NBC33) — What started as a fun night out with friends ended with a deadly dispute that killed one man from Eunice and landed a Carencro man behind bars.
On Monday, Oct. 15 the body of Michael Luke Darby, 24, was discovered behind a shrub next to a local business on Polk Street in Lafayette. Friends of Darby told investigators they had gone with Darby out in Lafayette the night before, but lost track of him and were unable to find him.

Investigators learned that Darby became involved in a conflict that night with Kyle James Toups, 26, of Carencro. At some point during the altercation Toups allegedly pulled out a knife and stabbed Darby, who died as a result of that injury.
A warrant for Toups arrest was issued on Tuesday, Oct. 16. He was located at 10:00 p.m. by the Beaumont U.S. Marshal’s Violent Offenders Task Force in Newton County, TX. Toups was arrested without incident and is being held in the Newton County Jail until he can be extradited back to Louisiana.
The Lafayette Police Department reports that this case is still under investigation.
