For the third time in less than two months, a Greenwood man has been arrested by Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry (LDAF) enforcement agents and charged, this time, with two counts of theft by fraud of timber.

David Lubas, 61, of Greenwood, was booked into the Claiborne Parish jail in Homer this morning. He was charged with theft by fraud of timber valued at approximately $10,500.

Investigators say Lubas was working as a consultant forester when two sisters, who are Claiborne Parish absentee landowners, asked him to help sell their timber for a 10 percent commission. Lubas reportedly told the landowners he had solicited bids and had obtained a high bid of $27,500 for their timber. At that point, the landowners signed a contract with the logging company and received a lump sum payment for their timber.

Unknown to the landowners, Lubas actually received a high bid of $38,000. According to statements from the logging company, Lubas directed the company to issue him a check for $10,500 explaining that this money was for his consulting fee as well as additional services that were to be performed on the property.

After receiving the check for $10,500, investigators say Lubas sent a bill to the landowners for his 10 percent commission. The two landowners each sent Lubas payments of $1,375.

“We arrested this individual twice in August for alleged timber thefts in DeSoto Parish. I commend our enforcement agents for their thorough investigation into an individual who seems to demonstrate little regard for other people’s property and has allegedly taken advantage of those who entrusted him to get a job done,” said Agriculture and Forestry Commissioner Mike Strain, D.V.M.
