A 47-year-old man was arrested for allegedly committing several burglaries, including theft from a church.

The Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office reports that the investigation began on Sunday, August 4 at roughly 5:00 a.m. Officials say a deputy noticed a vehicle parked and running outside a church located in Independence. The deputy then noticed a man walking from a shed located nearby.

The deputy knew that the residence is owned by the Pastor of the UPC Pentecostal Church. He also recalled recent church burglaries in the area and decided he should investigate the suspicious activity.

The deputy pulled up to the area and the suspect began running toward the parked vehicle. He then attempted to drive off, but the deputy conducted a traffic stop.

The suspect, Michael Brister, appeared to be hiding something located behind his seat. At that point they say he became “noncompliant” and struggled with the deputy.

The vehicle was later searched and they found (1) Apple I-Phone 3, (1) Kyocera cell Phone, (2) Black CD Cases containing various CD's, Multiple flashlights, (2) sets of high end jumper cables, (1) Black & Decker air compressor. Also located in the rear floor board were two screw drivers, one pair of pliers and a pair of latex gloves. On the drivers seat, a pair of black knitted gloves.

During the investigation, it was learned that within the past two weeks, a lawnmower and air compressor had been stolen from the church.

Brister was transported booked into the parish jail for Attempted Burglary and Resisting Arrest. Additional charges may forthcoming.
