BATON ROUGE, LA (NBC33) — If you get your exercise around the LSU Lakes, you'll want to be very careful. According to Baton Rouge Police, two people had their cars stolen in that area.
Police say it's happening because people are leaving their keys in what they consider "hidden places". Thieves are watching and when you leave, they come in, grab your keys, and take off in your car.
People we talked with around the LSU Lakes say it makes them nervous to come out and exercise.
"It’s not surprising,” Brittney Robert, Baton Rouge resident who frequents the area, said. “I've heard about a lot of break in around here. You just have to be familiar with your surrounding and watch where you're doing and where you're keeping your stuff."
Thefts tend to go up during the summer months. Officials say most are considered crimes of opportunity.
“A lot of the times they will just walk through a neighborhood and pull on car door handles until they find one that’s unlocked,” Cpt. Stone, Baton Rouge Police Department, noted. “A lot of that is juvenile activity. They’re looking for things that they don’t have.”
