A Baton Rouge man was killed last night and a woman is in the hospital suffering from life threatening injuries. One suspect is in custody after he was found in possession of a stolen New Orleans Police Department service weapon.

The Baton Rouge Police Department reports that the shooting happened around 12:30 a.m. on Thursday, June 20 in the 5200 block of Evangeline. Officials say evidence at the scene indicates the suspect shot the victims during a drug transaction.

Officers responded to the area when they heard gunshots. They were already located a short distance away.

The male victim, Anthony Jerard Jones, 29, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The female victim was alert when officers arrived. She was able to provide some information and they found a suspect nearby who matched the description. When officers attempted to stop him, he ran and discarded something he was carrying.

An officer eventually caught up with the suspect and a K-9 was able to track the item he dropped - a gun.

The handgun was reported stolen here in Baton Rouge in October 2011 by an off-duty NOPD officer whose car was broken into. The officer's NOPD gun and some other issued NOPD equipment was stolen. An arrest was made in the burglary in March of 2012, but none of the stolen equipment was recovered.

The suspect, Jermaine Ruffen, 29, was arrested and charged with First-Degree Murder, Attempted First-Degree Murder, Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon, Illegal Possession of a Stolen Firearm, and Illegal Use of a Weapon.

This is the 30th homicide investigation for the Baton Rouge Police Department during 2013. Of those cases, 12 remain open with no suspect.
