BRPD sees reduction in homicides for 2013; 12 cases remain open

Although violent headlines continue, officials say the number of homicides within Baton Rouge city limits is down from this time last year. However, there are 12 cases that are considered open with no motive or suspect at this time.

There have been 42 homicide investigations within East Baton Rouge Parish during 2013. Of those, 34 happened within Baton Rouge City Limits. However, not all of those cases will be included in the official data.

Based on the classifications of the Uniform Crime Reporting Statistics (UCR), cases ruled as negligent or justifiable homicide are not required for inclusion. In Baton Rouge, there have been 3 negligent homicides and 2 justifiable homicides; resulting in 29 cases that will be classified in the official totals.

When compared with the same discrepancy to 2012, Baton Rouge has seen 25 percent less homicides for the first half of 2013. Essentially, as of the end of June, there were nine less homicides this year when compared to last year.

As of Monday, July 22, the Baton Rouge Police Department verified that it is actively investigation 12 open homicide cases. Below is a summary and link to those cases are provided below.

1) Shaquanan Jones: Was found shot to death during an incident at her home on La Margie Road.

2) Daniel Cole: Was found shot to death in the 400 block of Connell Street.

3) Demarcus Thomas: Was found shot to death in the driveway of his home on Washington Ave.

4) Tivon Travin: Was found shot to death inside his vehicle located on Sharp Lane.

5) Christopher Fountain: Was one of three victims shot at on South Blvd.

6) CJ Grisby, Jr.: Was shot in the face during an attempted armed robbery.

7) Angel Brooks: Was found shot to death outside an alley located in her apartment complex on Mohican.

8) Octavia Jackson: Was shot to death outside Club Shenanigan’s on Plank Road.

9) Cleveland York, III: Was shot while inside his vehicle. He tried to drive off but he ended up crashing his car into the backyard of a home located on Ducros Street.

10) Ron Derison: Was riding his bike in the 6200 block of York Street when he was shot.

11) Justin King: Was found shot to death inside his home on Katherine Street. A second victim was injured.

12) Shaquille Davis: Was found shot to death in the front yard of his home on Aliquippa Street.

Additionally, there are 2 open homicide investigations with the East Baton Rouge Sheriff's Office.

1) Ellis Banks: Was found shot inside his apartment located in Jefferson Lake.

2) John Coates: Was found shot to death outside the Oakleigh Apartments located on Perkins Road.
