With the death of 11-month-old Aaliyah Heard, the total number of murders is ten for the month of June in Baton Rouge.

However, over half of those cases already have suspects associated with them sitting in jail.

Police say they're working hard to get the criminals behind bars, and while closing more than 50 percent of their cases may seem like a low number, it's higher than the national average.

Baton Rouge Police said that with help from the community and good police work they're able to bring some closure to families.

"Victims need justice and we're going to try our best to give it to them,” stated BRPD Cpl. Tommy Stubbs. “Lately, we have been solving a lot of murders, we've been putting a lot of people in jail and we're going to continue on."

BRPD was able to close around 60 percent of their murder cases last year.

The Baton Rouge Police Department has investigated 31 homicides in 2013. Twenty-one of those cases have resulted in an arrest, which is a clearance rate of roughly 67 percent. Eleven of the total homicides have occurred in the 70805 area. Seven were in the 70802 area code.
