BRPD investigating two unrelated homicides that happened overnight

BATON ROUGE, LA (NBC33) — UPDATE: The victim of the second case has been identified as Gary Terell Murphy, 42. He was reportedly stabbed multiple times.
ORIGINAL: Homicide Detectives are working two separate cases that happened during the early morning hours on Monday, Sept. 23.
The Baton Rouge Police Department reports that the first case happened shortly after midnight in the 2300 block of 72nd Street. The victim, Donald Ray Thomas, 47, was stabbed in his torso by an unidentified suspect. He was transported to the hospital where he later died as a result of his injuries.
Investigators believe Thomas was involved in an altercation with his attacker in the moments before he was stabbed. However, they have not yet identified the individual.
The second case was launched shortly before 6:00 a.m. after a man’s body was found outside a home located in the 2600 block of Jefferson Ave.
“We were originally dispatched to that location for a suspicious incident,” Cpl. Don Coppola, Baton Rouge Police Department, said. “When officers arrived, they found the body of a black male lying outside. Due to the status of the investigation we are unable to reveal any more information about this crime.”
