Twenty-five year old Anthony Winfield knows how violent the 70805 zip code can be. A year ago his best friend was killed just blocks from his home and before that somebody riddled the home where he lives with his mom and two kids with 13 bullets, almost killing her.

"People are scared. They're scared. They're so scared and my momma's one of them,” says Anthony Winfield.

Police wanted to stop these shootings. So, they started the BRAVE program and put cops into Winfield's zip code. The numbers say it might be working. There was just one murder in East Baton Rouge parish in October and that wasn't in the 70805, but that's not making Winfield feel any safer.

"A lot of people shooting…They’re shooting last night, night before last, night before last after that. They're always shooting," says Winfield.

Dale Sterling has owned Sterling Rentals on Shelley Street in the heart of the 70805 for the last 25 years. He definitely feels more secure with the increased police presence around his business.

"We're seeing more cops on the street. Obviously, with that one murder in the parish it's a good thing, but one is too many but we got a ways to go,” says Sterling.

And that's having an effect on his bottom line.

"As the area gets safer obviously business gets better for us," says Sterling.

But the only thing Winfield is worried about is giving his four and one-year old kids a bright future. So, he's leaving the only place he's called home as soon as he can.

"I don't want to move out, but it don't leave me a chance but to move out because I got to raise my kids the right way, out of this environment," says Winfield.
