BATON ROUGE, La (NBC33) – State Police Detectives arrested a Department of Public Safety employee on charges of theft. They say she used her position as a refund transaction processor to misdirect money from the state to personal bank accounts.
Officials say Lashunda Fleming, 30, of Baton Rouge, illegally diverted over $12,000 from the Department of Public Safety Office of Management and Finance into her personal bank account. They started tracking the case in November, which is when a supervisor noticed suspicious transactions. They discovered nearly 20 fraudulent DPS credit card transaction refunds.
“Due to the safeguards in place and the swift actions of personnel at the Office of Management and Finance, this illegal activity was quickly identified and brought to State Police Detectives for a full criminal investigation.” said Colonel Michael Edmonson, Deputy Secretary of the Department of Public Safety, said in a press release. “Integrity is a key principal within the Department of Public Safety. We will not tolerate anyone who chooses to violate the public’s trust.”
Fleming was booked on Monday, Jan. 3 into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison on charges of Felony Theft and Malfeasance. Fleming resigned from her position with her company, and DPS plans to seek restitutions from her for the misappropriations of funds.
