BR man hospitalized after being shot at park; area seeing increase in violent crimes

BATON ROUGE, LA (NBC33) — A Baton Rouge man is recovering in the hospital today after he was shot at a local park.
The Baton Rouge Police Department responded to the call at roughly 9:00 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 13. We’re told the 37-year-old victim was playing basketball at the Flannery Road Park.
The victim told police that he left the park when it started to rain. As he was walking he was shot by an unknown gunman. He was transported to a local hospital with non life threatening injuries.
Investigators have not established a motive or suspect for this shooting.
The Flannery Road Park is located in the 70815 zip code, which has seen a recent uptick in violent crimes. Most recently a man was shot and killed while he was sleeping in his home. His 6-year-old child was in the bed next to him. That shooting was the 8th homicide that zip code has witnessed during 2013, making it the second deadliest area in Baton Rouge. It is second to the 70805 zip code, which has seen 13 homicides this year.
