ASSUMPTION PARISH, LA — Deputies believe they’ve caught the person responsible for breaking into several vehicle that were parked at a boat landing.
In the month of September 2012 the Assumption Parish Sheriff’s Office began investigating a rash of vehicle burglaries which were taking place at the Bayou Cheramie Boat Launch on LA Hwy 398. It was reported that the victims would launch their boats and park their trucks near-by. After a day on the water they would return and find their vehicles had been broken into and items were stolen. The items stolen ranged from audio equipment to tools and other miscellaneous items.
Detectives were able to place surveillance cameras in the area. The cameras caught a glimpse of the suspect and his truck during one of the burglaries. Detectives were able to scour the area and locate a potential person of interest.
The surveillance was ramped up and on October 9, 2012 and Detectives were able to catch the suspect at the boat launch in the same truck as seen on hidden cameras. They were also able to locate several stolen items inside of the suspect’s vehicle and take him into custody without incident.
The suspect, Ulysess Payne, of Laplace, Louisiana, denied any involvement in the burglaries, however, with the overwhelming amount of evidence detectives charged him with two counts of Simple Burglary.
Ulysess Payne was booked into the Assumption Parish Detention Center and his bond has been set at $20,000.
The investigation is ongoing and additional charges are possible.
Sheriff Mike Waguespack would like to reiterate to the public the importance of writing down all serial numbers of firearms and electronics, whether they be stored in your home or vehicle, for they are an invaluable tool in locating stolen property.
