A suspect in a Plaquemines Parish homicide has been killed in an altercation with Mississippi authorities.

Police in Biloxi, Miss., said Carl Lance Wise, 57, was killed after an armed robbery and pursuit. Wise died Saturday.

Wise was the primary suspect in the first Plaquemines Parish homicide since 2009.

On Thursday, deputies were called to the 12000 block of Highway 23 in Jesuit Bend to conduct a "disposition check" on 72-year-old James Jones who hadn't been seen or heard from recently.

Deputies said they found Jones dead at the scene in a pool of blood.

Detectives said Jones was a former co-worker of Wise and that he had been in the area asking co-workers for money before Jones' death. Officers said they believe Wise had a drug problem.

Investigators said Wise had left the area was heading toward the Mississippi Gulf Coast. Detectives said they traced him through cellphone records. They were able to track him through Thursday in the Florida pan handle area before losing track of him.

Deputies called Wise's family but they had no information on his whereabouts. Then on Saturday, a family member contacted Plaquemines Parish deputies to inform them Wise had been killed by police in Biloxi.

Investigators said Mississippi authorities said Wise had committed two armed robberies and lead police on a high speed chase.

Detectives are still working to connect Wise to Jones' death.

The killing was the first the parish has seen since April 2009, the sheriff’s office said.
