An 18-year-old woman was arrested after she allegedly used an elderly woman’s credit card to make dozens of purchases.

The investigation was launched in September 2013 after the 81-year-old victim was notified by her credit card company about suspicious purchases. The East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Office investigated the case and learned that the purchases had been made by Laura Gaspard of Baton Rouge.

According to the arrest report, Gaspard is an acquaintance of the victim, but the report did not specify the nature of their relationship. It did, however, state that the two have known each other for 15 years.

The report also noted that the victim’s sister assisted with the investigation because the victim is legally blind and suffers from dementia.

Investigators were able to connect Gaspard to purchases made online from Bath and Body Works, Target, Christian Book, LSU Store, Walmart, and the Cato Corporation. The items were all shipped to Gaspard’s home address.

A warrant was obtained and investigators searched Gaspard’s home. They recovered items purchased by the victim’s credit card.

During questioning, Gaspard admitted to writing down the victim’s credit card information during a visit. She also admitted to using a key to enter the victim’s home to retrieve a package she ordered with her own money and had shipped to the victim’s home.

Gaspard was arrested and charged with Unauthorized Use of an Access Card as Theft of Assets of an Elderly/Disabled Person and Unauthorized Entry of an Inhabited Dwelling. She was booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison and was released on a bond of $2,500.
