Five children were removed from their Baton Rouge home and their mother was arrested after an investigation revealed that they were living in “deplorable conditions.”

According to the arrest report, police were contacted on Thursday, Oct. 10 regarding possible narcotics in the home of a 28 year old woman. The caller told police that the woman had five children ages 11, 9, 7, 5, and 4.

When police searched the home, they did not find any narcotics. However, investigators were shocked by the condition of the apartment.

The report notes that the home was covered with trash and the refrigerator was unplugged with spoiled food inside. Both toilets were overflowing and they found urine and feces on the floor of the bathrooms and in the living room. The bathtub contained clothing, food and human excrement. The remainder of the home, according to the report, was infested with flies, roaches and other bugs.

Child Protective Services was called to the home and ordered the woman to clean up the house. On Tuesday, Oct. 15, police were called again and notified that the conditions had not improved.

Detectives returned to the home and found that the conditions had not improved. When they asked the woman about it, she told them that she did not see anything wrong with the way she and her children were living.

The woman was arrested and charged with Cruelty to Juveniles (5 counts). She was booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison. During booking they learned that she had two outstanding warrants for her arrest. They were traffic violations for improper child restraints.

The woman is currently being held on a bond of $50,557.

NOTE: We did not include the name of the woman in this case to avoid identifying the children.
