As part of a trial program, Baton Rouge City Jail will be open around the clock starting July 22nd.

Parish Law Enforcement says there are two driving reasons behind it.

First - to crackdown and collect on the more than 160,000 warrants and unpaid tickets in the parish. It's also to lock up people that should be behind bars -
and send a message to criminals who have a history of thinking police aren't serious.

"I think that once people realize that its no longer just a piece of paper that you can discard or forget about - your gonna be held accountable to it - I think it will help out through the whole system". Says Sid Gautreaux, EBR Parish Sheriff.

Gautreaux says if you've been cheating the system.. expect to sit in city jail for at least 36 hours, or until posting bond.  After that.. its off to parish prison.

The trial program will run for several weeks using overtime money from several Law Enforcement agencies.   After that - the constbles office say they'll go to Metro Council to get the money they need to keep the jail open all the time.
