Baton Rouge Brother-sister duo arrested for Medicaid fraud
BATON ROUGE (NBC33) — The Louisiana Attorney General’s Office reported that siblings Cleveland and Barbara Smith were arrested for conspiring to cheat the state’s Medicaid program.
Cleveland Smith, 50, was employed as a personal care attendant, providing in-home care to his sister Barbara Smith, 49, between November 2013 and January 2014.
Investigators learned that Cleveland Smith billed the Louisiana Medicaid Program for services performed for his sister during dates and times when she was not actually home. Barbara Smith signed off on her brother’s service logs.
According to witnesses, Barbara Smith was actually providing sitting services outside of her home during times shown on her brother’s service logs.
The brother and sister were arrested and charged with Medicaid fraud and conspiracy to commit Medicaid fraud, respectively.
