BATON ROUGE, LA (NBC33) — The Baton Rouge Police Department’s Homicide Division made a handful of arrests today, clearing multiple open cases.
“They’ve done an awesome job,” Cpl. Don Coppola, Baton Rouge Police Department, said. “Detectives have put a lot of hard work and have done a great job clearing these cases.”
The latest arrests are for a cold case that happened back in August 2011. Police say a witness to the crime finally stepped forward and positively identified the shooter, Isaac Carr, 19, and his accomplice Delaney Carr, 34.
“There was a disagreement and Delaney pointed the victim out to Issac,” Cpl. Coppola explained. “They both chased the victim down the street prior to the shooting. They then fled the scene together.”
The victim, Michael Williams, 24, died at the scene. Without a witness, investigators had little to go on.
“Depending on what evidence they have or lack of evidence they have at the scene, it can be very difficult,” Cpl. Coppola said when asked about the challenges faced by homicide investigators. “And that’s why we depend on the public as well as Crime Stoppers to assist us with clearing these cases.”
New information was also crucial for two additional arrests made earlier in the day.
“Sometimes people don’t want to get involved, sometimes they’re afraid to get involved and that might be a reason why it would take a while,” Cpl. Coppola said. “And sometimes they go and hide before they realize that the right thing to do is step forward.”
In the first case, investigators were able to identify Jeremy Brown, 28, as the person responsible for the beating death of Shaun Hartley, 31.
“It was a violent death,” Cpl. L’Jean McKneely, Baton Rouge Police Department, said. “Apparently they had some type of argument before this incident. We’re not sure if it was related to drugs or money, but Brown became upset with Hartley. He struck him multiple times with a 2x4 and we believe he was also stabbed.”
The other investigation resulted in the arrest of Mrcarl Coleman, 19. He’s accused of shooting and killing Dwayne Foster, 48, back on Friday, Sept. 6.
“Additional information was received and investigators had enough probable cause to make the arrest,” Cpl. Don Coppola, Baton Rouge Police Department, explained. “Due to the status of the investigation we’re not able to reveal any further information regarding his possible motive.”
The department has cleared well over half of the homicide cases that have occurred this year, allowing the family and friends of those slain to rest easier.
“If you’re a witness to a crime or you have information of a crime, by all means, don’t wait. Come forward now so we can get these criminals off the streets,” Cpl. Coppola said. “Any information which could help investigators is needed.”
