JEFFERSON PARISH, LA (NBC33) — A total of 84 firearms have been stolen from vehicles in Jefferson Parish. Officials say the majority of the cars were unlocked.
“Please remember that firearms stolen from your vehicles are taken by criminals who place those same stolen weapons in the hands of other criminals,” Sheriff Newell Normand said. “These individuals who rob, shoot or kill with stolen weapons usually acquired that weapon from other criminals and not your average gun dealer. Please do not be a part of this violent cycle allowing you to be victimized.”
Shreiff Normand explained that there have been an “alarming number of vehicle burglaries” committed since the beginning of the year.
“As we have mentioned many times before, particularly when we experience rashes of vehicle burglaries in one geographical area, our investigators almost always determine many of the vehicles burglarized were not broken into, but, were simply left unlocked,” he added. “Often times, valuable items consisting of laptop computers, cell phones, GPS units, and personal property such as wallets and purses have been stolen in these incidents.
Officials are asking everyone to remove all valuable items from your vehicle and to lock your doors. If you are not able to remove those items, make sure they are out of sight.
“Lastly, it is imperative to practice responsible gun ownership by removing all firearms from your vehicle when unattended,” he concluded. “Secure your weapons as if someone’s life depends on it, because someone’s life does.”
