BATON ROUGE, LA — East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Detectives are arresting the parents in the murder of their 8-year-old son. These charges are in addition to charges of Second-Degree Cruelty to a Juvenile when the pair was arrested Tuesday following the child’s death.
Detectives found probable cause after an autopsy was completed to charge Michael Robertson, 46, and Lavaughn Riley, 32, with First Degree Murder of their 8-year-old son Xzayvion Riley.
Deputies responded to the Coy Avenue apartment Tuesday afternoon in reference to the unresponsive 8-year-old. Xzayvion was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival. The medical staff documented 56 various bruises, cuts and abrasions on the child, including an adult-size bite mark on his abdomen.
During questioning, Riley admitted causing bruises on the child during a beating. She also stated the victim's father, Robertson, caused bruises and scratches on the victim's neck. She also admitted that she witnessed Robertson beating their son, and she did not attempt to stop him. She advised on one occasion it sounded as if Robertson was throwing their son against the bedroom wall, and she did nothing to intervene.
The victim's sibling also told detectives that Robertson beat the child with his closed fist from noon Monday until Monday evening. Xzayvion allegedly complained of stomach pains and vomited throughout the night on Monday and was too weak to get out of bed on Tuesday. The sibling also witnessed Michael Robertson bite her 8-year-old brother on the stomach. The sibling also said she witnessed Robertson bite the child on a regular basis as a form of discipline. Robertson denied any involvement in his son's injuries.
The autopsy revealed that Xzayvion died due to a ruptured intestine caused by blunt force trauma to the stomach. According to the forensic pathologist, the injury was potentially treatable, if doctors had seen the victim when he complained of stomach pains.
