OUCHITA PARISH, LA (NBC33) — An 18-year-old was charged with negligent homicide after he allegedly caused a fatal crash. The vehicle he hit burst into flames and the driver was so badly burned that they have been unable to make an identification.
The Louisiana State Police reports that the crash happened on Wednesday, Aug. 14 at roughly 9:30 p.m. Carlton West of Bossier City was driving on I-20 in Ouchita Parish when he hit another vehicle from behind.
Officials say both vehicles became engulfed in flames. West was able to get out of the vehicle safely, but the driver in the other vehicle was unable to escape and perished in the flames. The Ouachita Parish Coroner’s Office has not been able to make a positive identification.
Although officials do not believe impairment was a factor in this crash, they do believe West was distracted.
If convicted, West faces up to a $5,000 fine and up to 5 years in prison.
The crash remains under investigation.
