Covington crash takes life of two year old passenger
COVINGTON, La (NBC33) – An early morning crash claimed the life of a two-year-old passenger.
Just before 8:00 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 20, Louisiana State Police Troop L were called to the scene of a car crash on LA 437 (Lee Road), which is located north of U.S. 190 in St. Tammany Parish.
Sarah Givens, 24, of Covington, was stopped in the northbound lane, waiting to take a left hand turn on Tice Road. That’s when a Mack dump truck, driven by Harry Lawrence Jr., 63, of Lacombe, failed to see the stopped vehicle and rammed into the rear bumper of the car. Givens’ car was pushed into the southbound lane and was struck by another vehicle driven by Maria Board, 55, of Covington.
Givens’ was seriously injured and transported to the University Hospital in New Orleans. Unfortunately, her two year old passenger, Mason Givens, suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene by the St. Tammany Parish Coroner’s Office.
Lawrence was the only individual to escape injury, but he was booked into the St. Tammy Parish Jail. He has been charged with one count Careless Operation, one count Negligent Injury, and one count Negligent Homicide.
Alcohol use is not suspected to be a factor in the crash with a blood sample from each driver pending at the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab.
