BATON ROUGE, LA (NBC33) — An emergency alert service is targeting seniors, scamming them out of money.
Telemarketers claiming to be with Life Watch call seniors offering them a free medical alert device system. They ask for the person's credit card information so shipping can be billed.
The company then puts a recurring $40 monthly payment on their card, but when the customer tries to dispute it, they can't reach anyone to fix the problem.
"It’s a $40 charge, which they claim was free, so now it’s not free,” Eric Smith, Acadian Monitoring Service, said. “For seniors on a fixed income $40 is very difficult for them to manage every single week so especially when they expected it to be free."
If you receive a phone call, you should contact your local law Sheriff’s Office.
