It may be the season of giving but residents of the Carmel Acres neighborhood in Central say a group of three men tried to exploit their generous holiday spirits. They told NBC33 the trio made the rounds of the neighborhood Wednesday asking for donations for charity. The only problem neighbors have said was the men didn't seem to be working for any legitimate organization.

"He didn't have any type of credentials or you know, name tag, to say, 'hi my name is…' or any badge or anything to show that's what they were doing. So I felt uncomfortable about it," Denise Callahan, a resident of the neighborhood explained.

"They actually changed sides of the street to avoid me. I was going to ask them what the deal was, you know, they looked rather suspicious," Earl Langlois, another resident, said.

Though the sheriff's office was contacted, no one was arrested. According to a spokesperson for the office the men going door-to-door told deputies they were collecting for a rehab program they were enrolled in. But neighbors say that's not the same story they were told.

"He wanted me to pick a soldier’s name from the list of names and a magazine to send to that particular soldier," Callahan said.

Though no one's been charged with any crimes neighbors say the experience still serves as a reminder that you can never be too careful.

"I want to see credentials. The legitimate people will have name tags visible. The three people I saw yesterday did not, trust me," Langlois added.

"Well you hate to be rude and just not open your door, but you just can't be too careful because you never know who it is. So if I had been here by myself I probably wouldn't have even opened the door," Callahan said.

Officials do mention that door-to-door solicitation scams do rise over the holiday season, and as always they warn homeowners to be constantly on their guard.
