DHH says St. Bernard water tests negative for brain-eating amoeba
ST. BERNARD PARISH, LA (NBC33) — St. Bernard Parish received good news Tuesday. Their water system is now free of the brain-eating amoeba that has killed three people since 2011.
The Department of Public Health announced Tuesday night that all of their tests came back negative. They attribute that to the increased chlorine levels and chlorine burn.
St Bernard Parish is one of two water systems that tested positive last year for the amoeba.
They have a new testing protocol that will hopefully prevent future problems.
The DHH still reminds people that as the weather gets warmer, the warmer water becomes more inviting for the amoeba. Residents should still exercise caution.
