Attorney General Buddy Caldwell reminds consumers adversely affected by Baton Rouge’s Powerhouse Gym to file a claim with the Louisiana Department of Justice’s Consumer Protection section by Friday, May 31.

Judge Tim Kelley of the 19th Judicial District Court has issued a judgment allowing the Attorney General’s Office to create a registry of adversely affected consumers and their losses. Consumers who wish to join the registry have until May 31, 2013, to file a claim by calling (225) 326-6400 or sending an email to Affected consumers should be prepared to show documentation of financial losses.

Powerhouse Gym, formerly located at 2084 S. Sherwood Forest Blvd., had originally planned to open its doors to the public in January of 2012.

Owners Ronnie and Connie Olah began pre-signing and charging consumers for memberships in 2011, then repeatedly delaying the grand opening date. The Olahs were unable to complete construction on the planned gym by January 2013 and were evicted from the property.

In February, the Attorney General’s Office filed a Petition for Injunctive Relief and Restitution declaring the owners in violation of both the Louisiana Unfair Trade Practices Act and the Physical Fitness Services Act. This Petition was granted, prohibiting the Olahs from contracting or advertising new business in Louisiana without approval, debiting money from affected consumers, or taking actions that would negatively impact affected consumers.
