It was a tragic case of mistaken identity.

A man shot and killed his 14-year-old stepdaughter as she crawled into a basement window in the middle of the night.

Police say he thought she was a burglar.

Just before 6am, Colorado Springs Police get a call about a burglary in progress.

Police say it was a 14-year-old girl.

"I heard three bangs. They weren't all right together. It was like bang, bang, bang," neighbor Jani Harvey said.

911 OPERATOR: "Homeowner is saying that they shot at the suspect, unknown where the suspect went."

...But a little over a minute later: tragedy.

911 OPERATOR: "May have been their daughter coming through the window."

Police Say It Was A 14-Year-Old Girl.

911 OPERATOR: "It looks like the daughter was shot in the stomach and the chest, and she is now in the basement."

Shots shattering a family, fired by the teen's stepfather -- bullets that could have even taken more.

"He goes, 'Mom! They removed bullets from our wall,’” said neighbor Mary Zesiewicz

Zesiewicz Was Asleep Behind That Wall.

"It's a very, very scary feeling," she said.

Over the initial feeling of shock: now, just sadness.

"My heart is grieving for a 14 year-old,” said Zesiewicz.

The only thing stolen, this morning: A girl’s lives on Christmas break from her freshman year of high school.
