BATON ROUGE, La (NBC33) – Seeing it once just isn’t enough, which is exactly what I learned last night at the River Center in downtown Baton Rouge.

Of course, over the years I’ve been told about the beauty of Cirque du Soleil. The show is described as unlike anything you’ve ever seen. My chance to learn that first-hand was granted last night for the first performance. Each moment of the near three hour spectacle was spent with eyes as wide as a child.

They say every Cirque du Soleil performance is unique, so I brought along a friend who had seen it years before. At the end of the night, he said, “That was nothing like what I remembered. Granted, I saw it twelve years ago in Dallas, but this time it was even better than what I remembered.”

The show began twenty-five years ago. Since then it has gained critical acclaim and has toured the world. The international delight now features a total of 55 artists from seventeen different countries.

"All of those countries, all of those cultures, all of those languages, all of those backgrounds come together, and work together and create together, and so I think that's what makes Cirque so unique,” Tim Smith, Artistic Director, explained. “We provide that type of international diversity that can be really felt on stage for sure."

The performance is called Alegria, which is a Spanish word meaning joy or jubilation. Within a single performance, up to eleven different languages are spoken. But, there’s no language barrier. The meaning for the show’s name is exactly the feeling you take away at the end of the show.

The show will continue throughout the weekend at the Baton Rouge River Center.
