BATON ROUGE, La (NBC33) – It’s the largest music festival in the nation, South by Southwest, and it’s held annually in Austin, TX. In the weeks and days prior to the event, Baton Rouge gains the chance to see its own slew of musicians in the Capitol City.
Currently the film portion of the two-week long festival is happening in Texas. Next week, however, the streets of Austin will be over run with thousands of bands all looking for a break in the industry. Some venues here in Baton Rouge have figured a way to capitalize off of this yearly exodus.
The Spanish Moon, located off of Highland Road, has a long tradition of brining some of the best in the business to perform in the Red Stick. Several years ago, they began participating in what is called G.F.L.
Short for Gas, Food, Lodging, the name was originally derived for a time of year when a collection of live music venues would all cooperate and book bands that were heading to South by Southwest. Over the years the number of participating venues has waned, but The Spanish Moon keeps plotting forward.
Chappo is a band based out of New York, but founding member Alex Chappo was born and raised right here in Baton Rouge. This year, he returns to his hometown on his way to his first official showcase at South by Southwest – the Spanish Moon is his first stop on that journey.
“This gives us a chance to play for a home audience, friends and family from growing up, and get loosened up and relaxed,” Chappo explained after a rehearsal session.
The Chappo band will perform tonight, Saturday, March 12, at The Spanish Moon as the opening band for Ra Ra Riot.
