Mark Toy was pulling out of the Convenient Food Mart in Versailles, Kentucky Sunday evening when something unusual caught his eye. "I looked over my left shoulder, and there's a gas pump on fire, and it's getting pretty involved really quickly," said Toy.

Surveillance video from the gas station showed the driver of a tan car pulling in to get gas. While filling up, the driver talked on his cell phone and got in and out of his vehicle several times. Suddenly, near the gas nozzle, flames erupted.

"The fumes from the gas where it was being pumped into the car were ignited by a source of ignition: some kind of spark or something," said Versailles Deputy Fire Chief Winfrey Adkins. Backing his truck away, Mark Toy started shooting cell phone video.

"The only thing I saw were vehicles fleeing the scene. I think when you see gasoline, fire, you get away as fast as possible," remarked Toy. Firefighters say no one was hurt. Crews got the fire under control within ten minutes.

"It could have been much worse if there had been somebody in that car," Toy said, "When you see something like that, especially up close, you just get panicked." Fire officials said it is never a good idea to get gas while on a cell phone or while a car is running.
