NBC NATIONAL NEWS — A Rhode Island man and his 2 year old son were reunited Tuesday after a brief but harrowing ordeal.
Adewale Adeni Awosika was doing laundry at EZ Laundry in Providence. He wanted to throw a load in the dryer, but his 2 year old, Adewale Jr., was sleeping. So, he ran in with his minivan running.
The store's surveillance video captured what happened next.
A man walked by the van and apparently realized it was running with no one inside -- or so he thought.
The video shows him looping around and coming back to the vehicle. Within seconds, the van took off.
"Everyone went, 'Oh, oh!.' I went out, saw him and ran but couldn't catch him. So, I saw somebody at the mechanic shop and said, 'Follow that car please,'" Adeni Awosika said.
They followed but lost the thief. Adeni Awosika said the man dropped him off at the laundry, where he called police.
The van was located not far away about 15 minutes later, abandoned, but still running. His boy was inside, unharmed, but not before some painful moments for a panicked parent.
"I'm a dead person because that's my life...I'm happy got my son back," Adeni Awosika said.
Adeni Awosika said next time he has laundry to do, Adwale Jr. will stay with his grandmother.
No arrests have been made.
