A Baton Rouge police officer is on leave after shooting a DWI suspect.

BRPD says Officer Matthew Jackson arrested Derek Brent Davis, 27, for drunk driving around 1:04 a.m. on August 31, 2014, in the 3200 block of Morning Glory Avenue.

Davis allegedly fought with Officer Jackson, threatened to kill him, and tried to take his gun.

Don Coppola Jr., a BRPD spokesperson says Jackson “while fearing for his life, was able to draw his weapon and fired multiple shots which struck the suspect (Davis) incapacitating him.”

Davis is currently in a local hospital but Coppola says he is expected to survive.

Davis is wanted on charges of Simple Burglary in Livingston Parish and now faces charges for the incident with Officer Jackson.

Jackson, who is a five year veteran of the Baton Rouge Police Department, is now on paid administrative leave pending BRPD’s ongoing investigation into the shooting.

OMG He tried to take the officer's gun and got shot!?! Que the riots, que the looting. Where is Al Sharpton? We need more media coverage of this terrible incident. Oh wait...the criminal was a white guy this time. Nevermind, it is only a big deal if the criminal trying to kill the officer is black.
