BATON ROUGE, LA (NBC33) — "It could be just an anomaly. July could be an outlier. So we are going to continue to monitor this situation and see if it does turn into a trend."
That was Rodney Mallett's, director of communications at DOT-D, reaction when he found out how many lane closures there were.
There were 76 lane closures in the month of July alone, causing major traffic delays. Which is the which is why the agency is working with others who respond in road emergencies to make sure problems get cleared up as quickly as possible.
"There's a lot of folks who do respond and we have been working with them in a response management class on how to remove vehicles, where to remove them, and to get that lane open," he said.
And because of the sporadic nature of road closures, the department cannot make road evaluations until the month is over.
"Well the randomness of a road closure, we can't predict stalls, we can't predict raw sewage on the interstate that happened the other day. So right now it's hard to say if we are seeing an increase in August," he added.
One thing Mallett said that we can control is how we drive, making sure we abide by the rules of the road.
"Distracted drivers, a lot of people on their cell phones, don't do that. Don't drive impaired obviously. Wear your seat belt as much as possible and use the available traffic apps and technology to keep up."
