New numbers out from the U.S. Census Bureau show Baton Rouge has a lot of catching up to do.

The Red Stick is on a list of cities with low participation rates in the 2010 census.

Nationwide--63% of Americans have mailed it back, but only half of Baton Rouge residents have bothered to do the same.

According to census officials, millions of dollars are on the line.

And if residents don't start mailing their forms in, it could prove costly to everyone.

"For every 100 people who do not fill out the census form, your community will lose some $2 million over the next ten years," said Sec. Gary Locke, U.S. Department of Commerce.

"If the folks of Baton Rouge aren't counted, those federal funds will go to some other community."

Come May 1st, census workers will start knocking on doors to collect the information.

Officials say, it will cost an average of $57 per household to go door-to-door.
