BR man killed in fiery crash on LA 308 in Lafourche Parish
THIBODAUX, LA (NBC33) — A 54-year-old Baton Rouge man was killed shortly after 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 2, when another vehicle rear-ended his motorcycle, causing it to catch on fire and trapping him between both vehicle on LA 308 just north of Thibodaux. Thomas Grems was driving his motorcycle when traffic caused him to slow and stop behind another car.
A few moments later, a pickup truck, driven by Joseph Elfert, 87, failed to stop and hit the motorcycle from behind.
This collision pushed Grems’s motorcycle to into the rear of the car in front of him, forcing that car off the road.
The motorcycle then caught fire and was soon engulfed in flames.
Grems, who was trapped between the motorcycle and the pickup truck, could not escape and perished in the fire. He was pronounced dead at the scene by the Lafourche Parish Coroner’s Office.
Elfert was not injured in the crash. Shelbi Faucheux, the driver of the other vehicle, was transported to a local hospital with minor injuries.
Elfert submitted to a breath test and is not suspected to have been impaired by alcohol. Routine toxicology tests are pending for Grems and Faucheux.
Charges are pending at this time, and the crash remains under investigation.
