BR Food Bank needs extra help weeks before school starts
Baton Rouge — The Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank is asking for your help in the heat of these last few weeks of summer before the school starts.
The shelves at the food bank are just about bare. It's not uncommon for donations to the food bank to dip in the summer, when a lot of regular givers are distracted by summer vacations and other plans.
But the demand for food is always high during the summer because families in need don't have the help of the free or reduced lunches their children can get during the school year.
“What are they doing now that it's summer when they're not being able to take advantage of those meals? Because a lot of those kids, that's the only meal they get,” said Mike Manning of GBRFB.
The GBRFB says they can put together about five meals with just one dollar.
