BATON ROUGE, LA (NBC33) — What's next? That's the question after the East Baton Rouge School Board voted to downsize from 11 members to 9 last night. School board elections will be held in November.
Now, a group of ten young professionals are coming together to find "top-notch" candidates.
They're calling themselves BR 10. Right now, they are scouting out new potential school board candidates. They tell me now, more than ever, is the time for change.
"Because with less voices, we have to make sure those voices are smart. We have to make sure those voices are strong, and that their goal is to help our kids," said Josh Howard, member of BR 10.
Responsible, a positive work ethic and a positive attitude are all things Josh Howard and Stephanie Bennett want in a school board member.
"Everyone on that school board has the best intentions for our students. Everyone has different ways in going about reaching those students," Howard said. "However, what we've seen in the past is that the solution is just not happening, and what is going on right now, our students are not being resourced the way they need to be."
"The school system is not known for being the greatest and the best," said Stephanie Bennett. "I believe if I'm going to live in a community, I want to make sure my children have the best opportunities."
Stephanie is a mom of three. She said it's her duty to make sure we have strong candidates for the November school board elections.
"Our school board is weak and needs change, and in order to do that, we have to start with identifying candidates who can be exceptional leaders and create change," Bennett said.
'"We need to find the right candidates to get on that board that way they have a fighting chance," Howard said.
So, Josh and Stephanie along with eight other concerned professionals are taking time out of their busy schedules to scope out some potential candidates, to get the school board back on track.
"Whether or not it's calling people on the phone or reaching out to mutual contacts, we want to know that we have qualified people in all of the districts served to our students," Howard said.
Qualifying for the November 4th elections will be held August 20th to the 22nd.
