BATON ROUGE (NBC33) — Plaquemines Parish Sheriff's Deputies are investigating a possible drowning in Belle Chasse.
On Wednesday, July 2, 2014, at approximately 6:30 p.m., the Plaquemines Parish Sheriff’s Office received a call of a missing person in the area of the Walker Road Boat Launch near the Hero Canal in Belle Chasse.
Sheriff’s Office Marine Division personnel arrived on the scene and located witnesses who related that the missing person, identified as Edward J. Cortez, 57-years-old, had dropped off a friend at the launch after a day of boating. The friend was going to move a truck and boat trailer from the launch to Cortez’s house. Cortez was supposed to meet the friend there, but never showed up.
A short time later, Cortez’s unoccupied boat was located approximately 1,000 feet east of the launch. The witnesses were unable to locate Cortez and feared for the worst. Marine Division personnel conducted a search and rescue operation until temporarily suspending the efforts at 1:20 a.m.
On Thursday, July 3, at 6:00 a.m., the Marine Division resumed the search, along with the assistance of the United States Coast Guard, Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries, and the Help! Search and Rescue Dog Team from Slidell.
At approximately 2:20 p.m., Cortez’s body was recovered near the canal’s north-side bank, close to where his boat was found. No trauma to the body was noted.
An autopsy is scheduled to be performed on Saturday, July 5 to determine the cause and manner of death, but Cortez is believed to have drowned.
