BATON ROUGE, LA (NBC33) — They protect us every day, out on the highways and close to home. Today State Police held their annual awards ceremony.
Trooper Kevin Cefalu got the Uniformed Trooper of the Year award, but he said this award is not for him. It's for his fellow troopers and the community.
"I was always brought up to treat others as you'd like to be treated. I know how I'd like the state police, the sheriff's office, and the city police to treat my family. As I go to work every day, I try to simply do that," Cefalu said.
Cefalu has been a trooper for more than 10 years, and in that time he's made a big impact. Thursday, he was awarded for his hardwork.
"It's for the consistent display of outstanding qualities. In this case, I believe the primary quality was DWI," Cefalu explained.
Cefalu said he is honored, but keeping people safe is part of the job. He knows how important that job is. He has his own family to protect.
"With the new additions to my family, with the twins, it creates a better emphasis as to why I do what I do because not only am I protecting my kids. I'm protecting everybody's kids," Cefalu said.
He said protecting our community takes more than just one man.
"I do nothing different from any other Trooper on the road. Every Trooper out their displays these qualities on a daily basis, and without the teamwork of the troopers, without the teamwork of the other agencies, it wouldn't be possible," Cefalu explained.
Just like all the honorees here at the Louisiana State Police Headquarters, public safety is his priority. It's his life.
"I love this job. I have no intentions on going anywhere. I'm going to retire wearing the blue uniform," Cefalu said.
More than 80 people were recognized at the ceremony.
