Sexual assault and rape is a major issue in the US, with one in five women being sexually assaulted in their lifetime. That's why women are looking for any way they can to keep themselves out of harms way. And one gym, "Baton Rouge Krav Maga" has provided the training they need with a course specifically for women's self defense.

"We have the people who are looking to prepare and take the preemptive strike. We have the people who know, this has happened to me and I don't ever want it to happen again. And we actually have women in our seminar who since taking our class have actually used our strategies and technique to prevent their own attack," said instructor, Adam Sibley.

Besides the hands on physical training the women learn, Sibley also teaches his students how to be ready mentally as well.

"I'm less of a victim because I am looking for you attacker. I am aware that you are out there. Attackers are looking for the person who is not looking for them. That's the easy target," Sibley added.

That sentiment is by shared by Don Hogan, owner of Baton Rouge police supplies.

"We hold our self defense classes and concealed weapon classes and we tell ladies one of the first things you want to do is know your surroundings," said Hogan.

At his store, you can find a wide range of items designed specifically to fend off attackers. Including JPX 450 cobra OC pepper gun, which shoots liquid OC, which doesn't feel good.

And if you're alone and walking in the dark, Hogan says just the sight of an item like a stun gun, can be enough to scare a threat away.
