BATON ROUGE, LA (NBC33) — "High number of crashes, our road conditions, with two universities here in Baton Rouge, we have a lot of young drivers. Inexperienced drivers."
Those are just a couple of reasons why Baton Rouge residents are paying nearly 2,000 dollars a year on car insurance, says Darlene Reine of Mid-South Insurance.
It is also a number that is way higher than the national average, but isn't shocking Baton Rouge natives.
"I know this state has some of the highest rates in the country. I can only imagine it's based off of the accident rates and how many we have per year and also our road condition. I feel like we have very poor road conditions. A ton of pot holes," says Jordan Talbot of Baton Rouge.
But Reine, says over the years she has noticed a lot of drivers who shouldn't be on the road at all.
"We see many DWI drivers who have more than one occurance. And they are still on the road driving with a suspended drivers license, continuing to injure people. And that's a big factor," she said.
And as for the driving conditions are town, some feel as if the city can be doing a better job to help ensure driver safety.
"The use of the blacktop asphalt in these weather conditions isn't necessarily up to par. I know concrete is more expensive and it takes longer to put in place but it doesn't bust up as bad when we get these heavy rains, when it's 100 degrees outside, the roads are really hot and a rain comes down and it cracks," said Talbot.
Now car accidents do happen. They are part of life and sometimes unavoidable. But there are some roads here that drivers should be extra careful on like Essen lane by the entrance of I-10.
