A new state law that raises the requirement for minimum coverage went into effect on January 1st.
Before 2010, drivers needed at least 10-20-10 coverage on their auto insurance.
Those numbers deal with the amount the insurance companies will pay out for injuries and damage in a crash.
The new law, changes the levels to 15-30-25.
On average, motorists will see a $6 increase in their monthly bill, or about $70 a year.
Officials say the change protects everyone one involved in a crash--from other drivers to doctors.
They say those people are often left paying the bill whenever the minimum coverage isn't enough.
