The fire departments of Ascension Parish have received some much needed funds.

Every year the state sends a rebate check to the parish. The money comes from fees assessed on fire insurance premiums. This year more than $450,000 was distributed to the fire departments across the parish.

The amount each department receives depends on the size of the population it serves. Many of the departments depend on the boost of funds to keep their expensive equipment in order.

"It's used to equipment and various things we might need at the station. and in turn that allows us as volunteers to better serve our fire districts. So our rescue truck's been in and out of commission with some mechanical issues. It runs for example all accidents and we cover a lot of I-10 so it runs all accidents, all medical calls in the parish," says Captain Sarah Pinion, of the Sorrento Fire Department.

The checks each department received this year ranged from around $10,000 to more than $128,000.
