A historic structure came tumbling down today. The old Amite River Bridge was successfully demolished to make room for the new bridge’s eastbound lane.
Around ten fifteen Wednesday morning about one hundred and twenty pounds of explosives detonated, sending the old bridge crashing down into the Amite River below.
Chicago Explosives Services says the dynamite placed on the bridge’s piers and the chargers attached to its metal, severed the bridge into five neat sections.
The DOTD says crews will spend the next few days removing these pieces before construction on the new eastbound span begins.
The bridge's new addition is scheduled to be complete by December 2010.
