An LSU alumnus now living in New Orleans was reunited with her dog last week after a carjacker accidentally took the pooch.

“I screamed ‘It’s Skeeter,’ and cried as soon as I saw him,” Meg Hall, owner of vehicle and pet, recalled.

The robbery happened outside her home in New Orleans on October 30, 2012. Hall told Police that a man rode up on a bike, approached her vehicle, punched her in the face, then forced her out of the car.

“I was banging on the window, 'Please give me my dog. I want my dog. Give me my dog,'" Hall said.
After weeks of searching, Hall had nearly given up hope. Then, someone called her and said they spotted her beloved pet.

“A woman called my personal cell phone and said ‘we got your dog,” Hall explained. “I wasn’t convinced. I had gotten excited and let down so many times at that point.”

Although weary, Hall went to the address the woman provided and knew instantly that the dog they found was her 11-year old Chihuahua/Jack Russell Terrier mix, even though his condition was poor.

“He was filthy and is very, very skinny,” Hall said about Skeeter’s condition. “The vet checked him out and did blood work. He was initially very weak and scared. It only took him a couple hours to perk up.”

Finding Skeeter and the car were the key pieces of evidence needed to find the person responsible.
“At first, investigators had little to go on in this case. But once the stolen vehicle was located, everything changed,” Superintendent Ronal Serpas, New Orleans Police Department, said.

Detectives were able to obtain crucial DNA evidence from the recovered vehicle that pointed to Damont Burton, 17, of New Orleans. He was located at a school and was taken into custody early this morning. Officials say he eventually confessed to the crime.

"The interviews conducted by our detectives combined with evidence reviewed by lab technicians put the name and the face on this suspect. A great job by all involved,” Serpas said.

Burton has a prior arrest for Armed Robbery.
