The stray dogs and cats of East Baton Rouge Parish are getting a new home.

The LSU Board of Supervisors approved a deal between Companion Animal Alliance and the LSU Vet school. It allows the shelter to move into a brand new facility right next to the vet school.

Having a new building will lower the shelter's costs, and make it easier to care for, and adopt out, the animals

LSU students will be able to learn and practice within the shelter, which CAA says will improve its quality of care.

"If an animal is brought in and there's an opportunity to run some tests on them, or to do some things very quickly, they need to be close by," Christel Slaughter, CAA Board President, said.

CAA says it's launching a fundraising campaign to pay for the new building, which will cost anywhere from six to $12 million.

It doesn't expect to open its doors until 2015.
