The owner of several horses was locked up after the animals were found to be severely neglected. Officials say the suspect not only admitted to the neglect, but also seemed flippant about the severity of the accusations.

The Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office reports that the condition of the horses was first noted on Saturday, Jan. 12. We’re told five horses were observed in a pasture on Strahan Road in Amite. They were said to be suffering from neglect.

Investigators noted the conditions of the property as well. They say the field was muddy, had very little grass and there was no hay or feed for the animals.

The Tangi Humane Society helped to assess the condition of the horses. They determined that one horse was beyond medical treatment and would not survive. The owner of the horses, Joseph Morris, allegedly admitted that he knew the horses were malnourished and that the one had fallen ill. He also admitted that he failed to take the animal to a vet.

Morris was arrested for one count Aggravated Cruelty to Animals and four counts of Simple Cruelty to Animals. At the time of his arrest he allegedly told deputies “All this over a horse!”

The surviving horses were removed from the property. They are currently being cared for by the Tangi Humane Society. After the receive an evaluation from a vet, they will be available for adoption.
