Officials in Livingston Parish are looking to create a full-service, parish-wide animal shelter.

Their goal is to get strays off the streets and into good homes.

Right now, the parish Animal Control Unit can't afford to pick up stray animals outside of the town of Livingston.

Parish leaders gathered a group of animal lovers to help figure out a way to pay for the program.

"There is definitely a need in Livingston Parish. We are over run not only with dogs, but cats and everything else you can imagine,” stated parish president Layton Ricks. “The bottom line is the money - that dictates what you can really do."

Ricks says he hopes the group can come up with a way to fund the project in a few months. The next step is to come up with a budget for the new shelter.
